Draft: Usually I work on these entries completely offline till its to the point of completion except for the design notes, then post it all at once. However for this one I wanted to confirm I had the table right so I'm posting this one despite not being much better than a barebones version.

Darokin in Birthright Terms

The Merchant republic of Darokin from Gecko's Mystara Birthright Conversion

Early Versions

1st (Solmyr) version

As Solmyr's write up

2nd & 3rd Version's

The only thing I remember changing was turning Halonica House "HH" into "HHd" to avoid a conflict with Harald Haaskinz which is also HH, just added some flavor text

Early Versions Design Notes

  • Law & Guilders- I was always impressed with how (I felt) Solmyr did a great job portraying the balance amongst the Darokinian houses, with their mix of strengths in different regions (both within Darokin and in surrounding lands) as was appropriate for each house, even giving them the appropriate law holdings. A great way to represent a merchantile republic of various houses that are alternatingly competing and cooperating
  • Temple- I always thought the Church of Darokin was a bit too monolithic (both in this layout and in the most depictions of Darokin pre-Codex), sure it's a national church without being the official church, but I always like the concept of many churches/faiths competing across darokin (not that the darokinians are notably religious or anything)
  • Sources- I'm not sure how cannoncial the two mages are but I liked the split, and darokin's not supposed to be too highly magical anyhow (at least since Merchant prince style magic doesn't show up nor influence at this level).

4th version

Text description. Biggest change was the addition of two new tags for the Darokinian government- one for the remaining feudal entities, and one for the council members. Also added some 0-th level law and source tags for the two dragon kingdoms in the region- Amburyr and Thalkoria. Expanded the humanoid holdings in the Orclands and elsewhere, and gave neighboring religions some influence within Darokin. Added the Church of Universal Harmony in Selencia. and added tags for the two religious factions amongst the Malpheggi lizardmen.

Design Notes

  • Law- The addition of some small law holdings is meant to portray the remaining feudal parts of Darokin and tries to incorporate some of the structure of the darokinian government into the game. The various humanoid tags are all level-0 so technically are more for flavour than any real effect. I'm not yet fully sure how I want to incorporate the draconic kingdoms (since they are basically overlapping the human & demihuman political entities but yet operate almost entirely outside of them.
  • Temple- Hopefully this depiction of the darokin religious scene is much closer to what I've always been envisioning: a lot of neighboring faith spreading across the appropriate borders, plus the addition of a few ideals from the codex.
  • Guilders- no changes
  • Sources- again, not sure yet how to incorporate the draconic hierarchy.

5th version

Text

6th version

RoE style with Law split into Law & Manor, and Gulid holdings split between Guild and Trade, with Trade Routes eliminated, along with some other alternative rules (ie natural diffuse + localized or artificial sources, and economic level, etc.)

Made each heartland and borderland a seperate province. Added Minor terrain features to each province. With the massive increase in not only provinces but available holdings I tried to better portray the distribution of the guild houses and the barons in the government and economy, as well as drastically diversify the religious situation. As befitting their semi-independent nature, the feudal Baron's even have a few provinces of their own, and Darokin's control of the Malpheggi and the Orclands was weakened. I was also able to assure that none of the tags are meaningless 0 level only holders (did I skip any?). I added a tag for the Lizardmen of the Malpheggi and added the Fens Witches (also in the Malpheggi) and Vithra's Truth and Light of Llogwyth as a level 1 temple in the Orclands. Finally, expanded Shires Trading and Mining across the border to have some small economic activity in greater hindon.

I am however lacking pre-Wrath economic indicatiors. I am also very concerned that Darokin now has too many provinces, and I had to end-up with many of them as level-2 or so provinces to keep it from being too powerful, but that doesn't fit with the portrayal of Darokin. Also, with all the new lower level provinces, suddenly Darokin's source potential blossem's, even after reducing every provinces potential by 1 it's still too high. I'm thinking I'll probably re-combine some of the province's, even thought that would mean completely reworking the balances between and amongst the rulership, religion, and economy of the various holders.

Description by Omar-ibn-Chukri: The Heartland territory of Selenica is, in many ways, like an independent city-state. Its distance from the other major centres of Darokinian commerce has tended to isolate it, and the city and its surroundings have become very self-sufficient as a result. Yet its very location and importance to trade in Darokin have meant that, at times past, officials in Darokin City have sometimes had to take steps to insure that the Selenican spirit of free trade are reigned in. It works both ways, however, as Selenican officials have long held immense sway in the goings-on of Darokin's politics. The Land: Selenica is situated in the grassy plains that lay at the feet of the Altan Tepes mountain range. Its location is ideal, as it sits right near the sole pass to parts east and north-Ylaruam, Rockhome, the Northern Reaches-and parts south-Karameikos and Thyatis. Virtually all commerce from those regions passes through the city of Selenica and other communities within the Heartland region. There is ample logging in the nearby woods, and the mountains and hills provide several sources of mineral wealth. The People: The people of Selenica think of themselves as Selenican first, Darokinian second. The population is quite a mixed breed: humans and dwarves dominate, though elves are not an uncommon sight. Of the human races living there, they are mostly of Thyatian or Traladaran stock, with a large minority of Ylari, such as myself. The region has always attracted Ylari peoples from the east. Inculdes the City of Selenica and the Villages of Scabton (210 pop.) & Valima (950 pop.). Borders Altan Tepes, Canolbarth, Dolak, Feador (Alfheim), & Hobart.
